PAIN MANAGEMENT NURSE

REPORTS TO: ASSOCIATE CNO / CHIEF NURSING OFFICER (CNO)

POSITION SUMMARY:

A registered professional nurse who provides comprehensive nursing care to clients experiencing acute and chronic pain from a variety of causes such as cancer, labour and deliver, post operative, headaches, etc. The nurse uses pain management knowledge and skills to make clinical decisions, develop client diagnosis, establish a plan of care, and evaluate the effectiveness of care for patients of all ages including special populations. Care is provided in collaboration with other health care professionals.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Educational Requirements:

Bachelor Degree in Nursing (duration not less than three years) or

Diploma in Nursing (not less than three academic years in nursing only) or

Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery (not less than three academic years) graduated from 1998 onward with pre medical secondary school certificate or its equivalent.

Post Graduate Degree in Nursing Management/Advanced Clinical Speciality

Professional Experience

Current license to practice nursing

BCLS certification

At least 2 years experience in a critical care setting desirable with pain management experience

Minimum 2 years general medical / surgical experience

Private hospital experience desirable

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

LEADERSHIP / ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS

– Supports staff in the care of patients with pain and collaborates with interdisciplinary care givers in revising treatment regimens.

– Demonstrates problem solving / critical thinking skills ensuring effective functioning of job performance.

– Assesses the needs and assists in providing for programs for pain information and education for the interdisciplinary staff throughout the health care system.

– Teaches, supports, coaches and mentors nursing staff to promote evidence-based practice, knowledge, skills, and professional development related to pain management.

Assesses, plans, designs, implements, and evaluates educational programs for patients and families as pain management.

– Liaise with the Department of Anesthesia and Nursing Administration in monitoring standards of care relating to pain management reviewing appropriate policies, procedures and amending accordingly.

Visit patients requiring pain management on a timely basis and evaluate care given and report back to Team Leader.

– Monitor patient satisfaction in relation to pain control and its management.

Act as a patient/staff advocate through the promotion and maintenance of ethical standards in pain management.

– Collaborates with multi-disciplinary team to provide patient care and manage patient’s pain.

Demonstrates organizational skills.

– Participates in staff/unit/departmental meetings and committees / projects as required.

– Demonstrates cooperation, coordination and respect among individuals / departments in order to provide excellent customer service (internal and external).

– Participates in developing and achieving patient care goals.

Performs additional duties when required.

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

– Demonstrates skills in continual assessment of patient and family’s physical and psychological needs.

– Demonstrates skill in co-ordination and planning of care / clinical pathway, and prioritizing care, based on individual needs of patients in acute or chronic pain.

– Demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to render care and services based on needs, age appropriateness and developmental stage of patients.

– Performs nursing interventions / procedures in accordance with established standards of care and policy and procedures.

– Manages and coordinates the care of patients in a defined care delivery model, utilizing the nursing process, which includes assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation.

– Maintains accurate and thorough documentation following established standards.

Shares knowledge and skills with colleagues and others.

– Maintains a safe environment for patients and staff.

QUALITY IMPROVEMENT (SAFETY, RISK MANAGEMENT):

– Identify and contribute to the educational needs of staff in pain management by liaising closely with the Hospital Educator, Clinical Resource Nurses and the Department of anesthesia.

Organize and be involved in all pain management education lectures/study days/discussions and development of competencies in cooperation with the Hospital Educator, Clinical Resource Nurses and Department of Anesthesia.

– Audit patient records to evaluate the effectiveness of the pain management service.

– Promote performance improvement initiatives hospital wide in pain management.

– Maintains clinical and professional competency based on the latest research and established standards of practice.

– Actively participates in CQI activities (data collection, CQI teams, etc.). Assists in developing practice guidelines and policies and procedures

– Serves if required on hospital wide CQI teams / committees / task forces.

– Actively participates in Continuous Quality Improvement Plan by using incident reporting, customer complaint reporting and medication error reporting.

– Assesses education needs and provides effective and age appropriate education to patients / families.

– Participates in ongoing educational activities.

– Maintains mandatory educational requirements.
