MATERNAL/NEWBORN – MIDWIFE

REPORTS TO: SENIOR MIDWIFE →HEAD NURSE

POSITION SUMMARY:

A midwife is a person whose competencies, qualifications, registration and/ or licence are recognised by the local regulatory authority for registration. She functions in accordance with legislative and hospital policies and guidelines relevant to midwifery practise and assumes responsibility and accountability for her own actions and clinical decision making.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Educational Requirements:

3-4 year General Nursing Diploma / Degree plus Midwifery certificate or diploma of not less than 12 months Or Direct entry midwifery degree of not less than 3 years

Professional Experience:

At least two (2) years of recent post-graduate midwifery experience – including labour and delivery

Private hospital experience desirable

Licence to practise:

Current license to practice nursing

LINES OF RESPONSIBILITY

Charge Nurse→ Senior Midwife → Head Nurse

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

LEADERSHIP / ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS:

– Demonstrates problem solving / critical thinking skills ensuring effective functioning of unit routine.

– Collaborates with multi-disciplinary team to provide patient care.

– Demonstrates organizational skills as in-charge nurse.

– Participates in staff meetings and unit committees / projects.

– Demonstrates cooperation, coordination and respect among individuals / departments in order to provide excellent customer service (internal and external).

– Participates in developing and achieving unit goals.

– Participate in orientation of new staff.

– Have knowledge of hospital and unit policies and procedures

– Supervise inventory/lost charge counts and is responsible for revenue recapture ensuring consumable and pharmacy items are charged appropriately.

– Performs additional duties when required.

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

– Demonstrates skills and competencies in continual assessment of antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum woman and her baby’s physical and psychological needs under the guidance of JCIA.

– Offers advice and safe, effective midwifery care that respects the cultural and social needs of each woman and her family during the antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum period.

– Demonstrates competency in the skills needed to assist and support the woman before, during and after child birth,

– Identifies complications and deviations from the norm.

– Recognizes emergency situations and intervenes in a timely matter.

– Provide safe and effective care of the newborn.

– Works collaboratively with other health care professionals to improve the delivery of services to women and families.

– Performs nursing interventions / procedures in accordance with established standards of care and policies and procedures.

– Assist medical colleagues with diagnostic therapeutic interventions.

– Maintains accurate and thorough documentation following established standards.

– Maintains competency in the use of equipment and material necessary for the resuscitation and stabilization of the woman and the neonate.

– Assists physician in clinical rounds and record orders.

– Promotes uninterrupted (exclusive) breastfeeding and rooming in.

– Provides support for women who make an informed decision not to breastfeed.

– Safely administers medication according to the hospital policy during pregnancy, birth and lactation,

– Documents medication administration accurately according to protocol.

– Floats to other areas within the hospital when required.

QUALITY IMPROVEMENT (SAFETY, RISK MANAGEMENT):

– Functions in accordance with legislative and policy guidelines relevant to midwifery.

– Contributes to the policy development and reviews impacting on midwifery.

– Actively participates in Continuous Quality Improvement Plan by using incident reporting, customer complaint reporting and medication error reporting.

– Assesses education needs and provides effective and age appropriate education to patients / families.

– Maintains mandatory requirements and keeping a record of all learning and professional activities attended.

– Participates in ongoing educational activities.

– Maintains mandatory educational requirements.

– Contributes to professional development of colleagues.:
