MANAGER, OPERATING ROOM (OR/CSSD/PACU)
REPORTS TO: Assistant Chief Nursing Officer
POSITION SUMMARY:
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Assumes overall responsibility for effective, efficient and cost-effective operation of the Operating Room Department. Directs, co-ordinates and evaluates the activities of the designated area for the purpose of maintaining optimal delivery of patient and customer care and utilization of the available Operating Rooms and staff.
POSITION QUALIFICATION:
Educational Requirements
Bachelor Degree in Nursing (duration not less than three years) or
Diploma in Nursing (not less than three academic years in nursing only)
Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery (not less than three academic years) graduated from 1998 onward with pre medical secondary school certificate or its equivalent.
Post Graduate Degree in Nursing Management/Advanced Clinical Speciality
Professional Experience:
Current nursing license.
Minimum 6 years demonstrated incremental leadership and management experience.
Specialist training/experience, e.g. Diploma in Operating Room Science.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
LEADERSHIP / ORGANIZING SKILLS
Clinical Responsibilities.
– Coordinates the provision of safe, efficient, and economical 24 hour nursing care/cover in line with established standards of care including “On call” coverage.
– Demonstrates knowledge of clinical skills applicable to the clinical specialties of the unit and acts as clinical resource to staff.
– Demonstrates knowledge of care and services based on age appropriateness and developmental need of patients.
– Provides and supports direct culturally acceptable care for patients and families.
– Collaborates with patients, families, and health care professionals to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
– Demonstrates an awareness of professional standards – keeps up to date with professional literature and changes in standards.
Management Responsibilities:
– Develops measurable goals for the unit. Implements and evaluates new and creative approaches to meeting goals.
– Creates and supports an environment which fosters teamwork, cooperation, and respect for cultural diversity.
– Coordinates with Nursing Office to ensure all staff are in possession of a current license.
– Ensures all staff receives written annual / probationary evaluations by review date.
– Ensures attendance annually for staff at mandatory in-services
– Ensures completion of departmental and unit specific competencies.
– Ensures 100% of new staff complete a planned departmental orientation within 120 days.
– Promotes development and use of appropriate Nursing Care plans and Surgical Preferences.
– Maintains accountability for budgeting/financial management and optimal use of resources in unit.
– Supports, enforces, and interprets institutional and departmental policies and procedures to staff
Promotes professional and clinical growth of self and staff.
– Participates/ Chairs hospital-wide and nursing committees as required.
– Integrates evidence based research/practice into clinical and management process in unit.
– Promotes physician satisfaction with nursing services provided.
TECHNICAL STAFF FUNCTIONS :
– Promotes staff competency in use of all technical equipment used on unit.
– Ensures efficient functioning of all technical equipment on unit.
– Maintains a safe, hygienic JCI standard unit environment.
QUALITY IMPROVEMENT (SAFETY, RISK MANAGEMENT):
– Promotes attendance at hospital and unit based in-services.
– Actively participates in departmental/hospital-wide CQI activities as required.
– Co-ordinates annually two fully documented unit Performance Improvement Projects.
– Promotes continuous performance improvement in daily operations.
– Participates in collecting and/or reviewing data to enhance services within the department and makes recommendations to modify unit’s clinical practice based on QI findings.
– Ensures a safe working environment through compliance with Hospital Policy and Procedure regarding safety, infection control, and security.
– Promotes incident and customer complaint reporting to improve patient, family and customer care.
– Thoroughly investigates all incidents and customer complaints.
