Get to know Karachi

A place with its own rhythm.

Karachi is Pakistan’s largest coastal metropolis, where Arabian Sea sunsets, historic architecture, busy markets and neighbourhood food streets create a city of contrasts. Spend one day with its heritage around Saddar and the old town, another along Clifton’s waterfront, and leave room to try the city’s famous biryani, bun kebab and seafood. Distances and traffic are part of the experience, so plan each day around one area.

Culture & connection.

Karachi has grown through centuries of maritime trade and migration. Its many communities have shaped a diverse cultural life, visible in language, music, food, markets and religious architecture. Colonial-era civic buildings stand alongside mosques, temples, churches and contemporary cultural venues. The city’s port and coast remain central to its identity.

Local hospitality is often expressed through tea and shared meals. Respect customs at religious sites, ask before photographing people, and check local guidance before visiting the beaches or islands. Conditions and access can vary, particularly during monsoon weather.

People & local life.

Urdu is widely used as a common language, alongside Sindhi, Punjabi, Pashto and other languages spoken across the city. English is common in many business and visitor settings. Karachiites often gather at tea stalls, restaurants and seaside promenades; food is a highlight, from biryani and bun kebabs to grilled seafood and coastal snacks.

Karachi is large and traffic can be heavy. Use trusted transport, allow plenty of time between neighbourhoods, and check local advice for beach visits. The Pakistani rupee is the local currency.
