Founded in 1471 by Moulay Ali Ben Rachid as an outpost against Portuguese invasions, the city transformed into a peaceful sanctuary when Sephardic Jewish and Moorish refugees fleeing the Spanish Reconquista arrived.
They built whitewashed courtyards with horseshoe arches, introducing the Jewish tradition of coloring walls with blue lime wash to symbolize the sky, divinity, and peace.
